Brinda K. Varma is an Advocate and Patent Attorney with over 17 years of experience in various arenas of law. Her area of practice spans around wide spectrum and largely focuses on dealing with Intellectual Property Rights, consumer disputes, women and child rights, company matters and civil suits. She is associated with research wings of several institutes to frame their IPR strategies. She is the managing partner of Aekam Legal, a law firm based out of Bangalore, which handles and assists research entities and businesses including start-up’s in various legal matters from inception of a company to protecting their IP and framing their policies. Her primary focus areas are patent drafting and prosecution, technology transfer negotiations, training researchers of various educational institutes and start-ups on various aspects of IP related areas. She was associated with Intellectual Property and Technology Licensing office of Indian Institute of Science as an IP consultant for a period of five years. During her tenure she was instrumental in transforming the IP cell of IISc from a service facilitator to a service provider. She is currently the external counsel for IISc and handles interalia technology transfer contracts for IISc inventions and research and development contracts and is involved in negotiating, drafting, reviewing and managing IISc contracts. Dr. Brinda holds a PhD from NLSIU Bangalore, a master’s degree in Biochemistry and an LLB degree from Bangalore University. She also holds a Post-graduation degree in Business Administration from Symbiosis, Pune. She is a registered Indian Patent Agent and qualified to practice before the Indian Patent office. She is the recipient of Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS) for Patent Experts. Dr. Brinda is a regular speaker at various forums and organisationsand has delivered talks across the country in the field of IPR . She is also involved in corporate training in the fields of IPR, commercial laws, contracts and consumer related laws for various entities such as IIM, DRDO, IISER, L&T, CMTI etc. Also, she is associated with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), and KSCST( Karnataka state counsel for science & technology), Govt. of Karnataka, as an IPR consultant.
